I don’t know about all of you, but between Little League, household chores, 3 children, and a job, I can’t remember that last time I got a good night’s sleep. There’s nothing worse than waking up and feeling exhausted. You are tired when you go to bed, but then toss and turn all night. Perhaps you are thinking of the day ahead or are just restless. I have good news for you. I have a potential remedy for your sleep issues.
Studies show that those that participate in a regular exercise regimen tend to see the greatest improvement in their sleep. Those that sleep well already do not generally see an improvement (but who cares, they are sleeping well already!!).
Now there has to be a reason for exercise to work in this way. Regular exercise relaxes your muscles and lowers your resting heart rate. It also improves your emotional health. Working out relieves stress, anxiety and depression, which all can interfere with your sleep patterns. Exercise also helps keep hormones in check, which can fluctuate and cause stress to your sleep patterns.
If you are just getting into an exercise regimen, start slowly. It’s easy to overdo it, which can work against you and cause insomnia. There are other remedies as well. Cut down on your caffeine intake and limit it to the earlier part of your day. Try relaxing with a good book before you go to bed or take a warm bath to relax you. If you have kids, some of these tips may seem impossible, but remember to take time for yourself, and get a good night’s sleep!!
