Beat the Heat PDF Print E-mail
ThermometerI am sure that I am in the minority, but I love to exercise in the heat!!  The hotter, the better.  My joints don’t ache, I love to sweat, and I am in heaven being warm!!  Lots of people, however, don’t feel the same way I do.  There are things you need to be aware of when exercising in the heat.

It’s very easy to dehydrate.  It’s important that you continue to drink water as you exercise.  When you sweat, your body is trying to cool itself.  You need to add this water back to your body.  The better hydrated you are, the better your body will respond to the heat and your work out as well.

Wearing loose clothing will help keep you cool.  Sweatshirts in 90° weather will make you sweat more, but it’s also dangerous.  You don’t want to overheat.

If you start to feel dizzy or nauseous when you are exercising in the heat, it’s vital that you rest or back off the intensity of your workout.  This may mean that you are working too hard, or it may be the sign of something more serious.

Work out with a buddy.  You can keep an eye on each other, and it’s usually more fun to work out with a partner.

Exercise in the cooler parts of the day if possible.  Heat index is usually lower in the morning or later in the evening.  If that’s not possible, just keep a fan near you if you are inside!!

People tend to lose their appetites when it’s so hot out.  Make sure that you are eating enough to fuel your body through your workouts.
Lots of people try to work out outside during the summer months.  There’s nothing wrong with this.  Just remember, lying out and getting a tan in your backyard is not a workout.  Keep moving this summer and have fun!!

Aches and Pains

I’m sure you all have heard the catch phrase “No Pain, No Gain” and think that when you being your exercise regimen, that stands true.  Lots of people get sore when they begin...
